Gandhi Medical College in Bhopal embarked on its journey towards the new millennium with its inauguration on August 13, 1955, by Pt. Lal Bahadur Shastri. Initially housed in the Polytechnic building, it began with 50 students and two departments: Anatomy and Physiology. Construction of its own building commenced a year later and was completed on March 13, 1963, inaugurated by India’s first Prime Minister, Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru. Situated at the site of the historic Fatehgarh Fort overlooking the Upper Lake since 1722, the college has a rich history.

Noteworthy events include the laying of the foundation stone for medical wards by Rajkumari Amrit Kaur in 1955 and the boys’ hostel by King Maharaja Mahendra Bir Vikram Shah Deo in the same year. Hospitals such as Prince of Wales (now Hamidia Hospital) and Lady Linlithgo (now Sultania Zanana Hospital) are integral parts of the college, catering to men and women respectively. The Lady Bhore Centre near Fatehgarh plays a crucial role in prenatal and child welfare activities, along with offering counseling for preventive and social medical needs.
